LT Billy Paulsen, Jr.  Post 6849 was established in 1946 to honor the memory of LT Paulsen, the only son of a Spreckels family, who died of wounds in Bastogne during the
Battle of the Bulge while serving with the 969th Field Artillery Battalion (one of the few African-American combat units serving in Europe), which was at the time under the command of the 101st Airborne Division (the "Screaming Eagles").  The 969th Field Artillery Battalion received the Distinguished Unit Citation (now called the Presidential Unit Citation) for their part in that Battle.
